To coincide with the Sandstone Heritage Trust Steam and Cosmos Festival from 9th to 13th April 2008, Steam in Action will be running a special train from Johannesburg to Ficksburg (and return) for SIA members to attend this event. Although this train is primarily intended for the Steam in Action members team, it is also open to the general public and everyone is welcome to come on board. We have a maximum of 100 places available, so it is important to book early to avoid disappointment. Bookings close on 31 March 2008
We plan to double-head the train with a matching combination of Class 15F No.3052 "Avril" owned by world renowned wild life artist, conservationist and steam enthusiast, David Shepherd, and the Class 15F No.3016 Gerda from the Reefsteamers stable. Steam in Action members are encouraged to be hands on during this trip as, during the stopover at Ficksburg, the locomotives will be used to bring two Class 25NC locomotives from the Bethlehem Depot to Ficksburg. The two Class 25NC locomotives are under threat of being scrapped at Bethlehem and will be relocated to Sandstone's Ficksburg facility for safekeeping. We invite you to come and enjoy the scenery, the heritage machinery, the company and the participation in the worthwhile, memorable experience of saving two locomotives.

UPDATED REDUCED PRICES :
Running a steam locomotives depot is an expensive business as overhauls and repairs have to be factored into the costs. For instance, a boiler re-tube may cost R200 000 plus. And where does the money for restoration come from? But we wanted to avoid the 'blue-train phenomenon', where a South African resource becomes totally unaffordable for the locals and is only used by overseas tourists.
After much discussion and re-planning, the Freestate Explorer prices have been drastically lowered to make the trips more affordable to the locals.
