ON THE FOOTPLATE

DVD Price R150

The closest you’ll ever get to driving, firing and servicing a steam locomotiveBefore the planned departure, the fireman shovels coal into the firebox and checks the steam pressure. The driver tests the brakes for the whole of the train and also checks the motion parts. He stares out of the window waiting for the “right away” signal. Then he pulls the regulator handle towards him. As soon as the steam force of the engine kicks in and the train begins to move, he gently releases the handle for a slow, smooth acceleration. The engine gracefully leaves the station through the maze of points and crossings.A 100 km further, the driver sends the whistle signal and moves the train over the ash pit for the fireman to clean the fire, take on water and a load of coal. The driver oils and greases the loco and makes sure that the train is properly serviced. On the foot plate the driver is the boss, and the fireman is under his supervision. Running Time: 1 hour and 25 minutes. For more information contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

CHERRIOTS OF FIRE

DVD Price R150

The train to the Ficksburg Cherry Festival was hauled by Reefsteamer’s flagship, 25NC No. 3472 double headed with 15F No. 3016. The locos performed flawlessly and attracted the attention of many bystanders and motorists. It was quite chilly the next morning and made for a spectacular show of condensing steam as the two engines made their way up the steep grade out of Bethlehem. By the time the sun was up, all the passengers marvelled at the scenery. But the heavens opened up, turning the railway track and festival grounds into a mud pit. The next day Reefsteamers ran three trips to offer others at the festival the opportunity of experiencing steam travel from a bygone era. That evening the crews prepared the locomotives for the return trip, hoping to make an early start. The trains pulled out of Ficksburg just after 5AM. With the sun just piercing over the horizon and through the golden sandstone cliffs, one could not stop wondering if this was a paradise on earth.Running time: 1 hour and 10 minutes. REEFSTEAMERS' GREAT TREK (duration 1hr 10 min)

DVD Price: R150

Reefsteamers’ Great Trek is an edited video footage with commentary made by Reefsteamers members and steam train photographers. The DVD was initially sold to Reefsteamers’ members and steam enthusiasts as a souvenir of this amazing journey. Due to its overwhelming popularity we decided to sell it to the public. The video includes some spectacular footage from one of the most picturesque lines in South Africa – the Bethelehem-Bloemfontein line skirting the snow-covered Drakensberg Mountains and meandering between sandstone cliffs. The Springs-Bethal line and the Krugersdorp-Magaliesburg line are also included. Featuring steam locomotives such as two 15Fs, 12AR and 25NC, often double-headed, the DVD is a must for steam enthusiasts as well as the general public. ADVENTURE STEAM (Duration 1hr 14 mins)

DVD Price: R150

In this documentary, we explore the past, present and future of the narrow gauge locomotives in South Africa. We meet these machines at Sandstone Estates of the Eastern Free State, on Banana Express and at Ixopo in Kwazulu-Natal and the Apple Express in the Eastern Cape. And the most importantly, we join The Avontuur Adventurer’s train hauled by the famous Kalahari locomotive on a three-day journey from Port Elizabeth to Avonuur – the longest narrow gauge railway in the world (Duration 38min).The bonus video NARROW GAUGE SUPERPOWER (Duration 36min) is a living tribute to narrow gauge Garratt locomotives at Sandstone Estates. The main feature, however, is the successful attempt for the world record – the longest steam-hauled train in the world. With three locomotives (two Garratts and Kalahari) and 48 wagons and an estimated load of 475 tons this was certainly another one for the record books. At Sandstone Estates in the eastern Free State of South Africa, an event unique in the 2 foot preservation world was staged, Under African Skies - A hands on experience for steam enthusiasts from all over the world. All of the working Sandstone narrow gauge steam fleet was in steam at one time or another allowing enthusiasts to enjoy a variety of engines on the spectacular system. At one time 9 locomotives were operating! Enthusiasts had to prepare their engine themselves and were provided with a suitable load for the experience. The Cosmos Festival with an intensive train service was run using NGG16’s, 113 & 153, the Lawley, the Fowler, “Sandy” and the O&K. In addition to the passenger trains, a special military train had been configured featuring specially camouflaged wagons and loaded with military vehicles and weapons.
